Former President Donald Trump is being mocked for his recent quip about climate change, where he said that it would just create “more beachfront property.”
The remarks from Trump came during his weekend appearance on “Fox & Friends.” The former president was asked about global warming and called it the “great hoax,” adding that nuclear weapons were “the single biggest threat, not global warming.”
“They say that the seas will rise over the next 400 years, one-eighth of an inch, you know, which means basically have a little more beachfront property OK,” Trump said.
The joke from Trump received laughs from the show’s hosts, but several have jumped to raise concern over Trump’s comments.
“Sea level rise due to climate change will destroy up to 70 million homes over the next 30 years,” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) wrote on X. “Trump thinks that’s good because we’ll ‘have a little more beachfront property.’ He will sacrifice our planet for the profits of fossil fuel executives. We cannot let that happen.”
He was also mocked by others online, with some pointing out the ridiculousness of his nonchalant take on climate change.
“He is too stupid [to] realize that that this would mean that his trillion zillion dollar Mar-a-Lago would be underwater and worthless,” one person wrote.
“Not to mention some underwater property that’s going to go for an absolute steal!” another said, while more deemed his comments “nonsensical.”
The National Ocean Service warns that sea levels on the United States coastline will rise an estimated 10 to 12 inches over the next three decades. This has scientists worried as it will match the amount accrued over the previous century.
With a rising sea level, there will be an increased intensity of storm surges, flooding, and damage to the coast, not to mention the displacement of people and wildlife, according to National Geographic.
