LIVONIA (WWJ) — Two Detroit Police officers have been killed in what DPD Chief James White called a “domestic” incident in Livonia.

In an update Monday, officials have identified the officers as 22-year-old Maria Martin, and 26-year old Matthew Ethington, II.

In a press release, Livonia Police said they arrived for a wellbeing check at a home on Farmington near 6 Mile Road on Sunday, at around 12:30 p.m.

At the home, they found a man and a woman dead. A baby was found unharmed inside.

The child is now in the care of a family member.

“It looks, preliminarily, like a murder suicide,” White said in a brief media update.

Autopsies by the Medical Examiner's Office determined that Martin died after being shot multiple times, while Ethington died from a single gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted.

Livonia Police will be handling the ongoing investigation.

“It’s a sad day for our department,” Chief White said. “Thoughts and prayers go out to the family, our officers as well as the command team.”

The relationship between the two officers is not known at this time.
