For the first time in over a year, you can get a stiff drink on a United Airlines flight. The airline had halted the sale of hard liquor on its airplanes not long after the COVID-19 pandemic began early last year.

But as of Monday, the booze is back.

United is allowing economy class passengers on domestic flights of more than 300 miles to purchase hard liquor “in response to the feedback we’ve received from both customers and flight attendants,” the airline said in a statement.

“The ability to offer a complete food and beverage menu is something we know is important to our customers.”

However, the decision’s wisdom is considered by some to be questionable, due to the continued rise in incidents involving hostile airplane passengers on several airlines nationwide.

More than 5,100 cases have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration since the beginning of 2021 by flight crews. The FAA says the consumption of alcohol is often to blame in these incidents.

Both American and Southwest Airlines will continue their suspensions of alcohol sales at least into 2022.
