A Massachusetts man found himself in grave danger when he attempted to rescue his dog from icy waters.
Ed Berger’s canine companion ran out onto the frozen surface of Lake Waban and fell through the ice , prompting Berger to try and save his pet.
Luckily he had already asked someone nearby to call 911 because first responders had to pull Berger from the lake along with his dog by the time they arrived.
The two men from the Wellesley Fire Department thankfully were successful rescuing both Berger and his pooch.
“The Wellesley Fire Department rescued a person and their dog after both fell through the ice at Lake Waban on Wellesley College on Sunday, January 12, 2025 at 445 PM,” the WFD wrote in a statement.
“Both human and dog are okay after being evaluated at the hospital and a vet clinic.”
The entire harrowing ordeal was caught on camera, and the video has since gone viral, prompting the WFD to issue a warning they hope will be heeded.
“The big message in this case is, if your dog goes in the water, call 911 and wait for help to come,” said WFD Deputy Chief Michael Giagante.
As for Berger, he’s just grateful for the assistance from people who knew what they were doing.
“You can see from the video that they’re just absolutely so well-trained,” he told NBC Boston. “It was just like two guys I was hanging out with. They do this thing and they executed it flawlessly.”
