On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump was found liable in a civil case and ordered to pay $5 million in damages to columnist E. Jean Carroll.
Carroll alleged she was raped by Trump in 1996 in a dressing room at a Bergdorf Goodman store across from Trump Tower in New York City.
While Trump was not found liable for rape, he was found liable for defamation and sexual abuse against Carroll.
However, while there are several criminal indictments still to come for Trump, this case was purely civil litigation and therefore no criminal penalties were on the table.
That means that while the jury did find Trump liable for sexual abuse in this case, the former President will not be required to register as a sex offender.
Trump was not present in the courtroom when the verdict was read, and he has continued to decree the lawsuit, and his other criminal indictments and investigations, as “politically motivated.”
