It was quite shocking to some when word leaked or dripped out from the City of New Orleans that there would be no Mardi Gras parades in Orleans Parish next year. I say “shocking to some” because, given the current COVID conditions and governmental guidelines, it would almost impossible to make a rational case for allowing parades.
By its nature, a Mardi Gras parade is the perfect COVID superspreader event. No social distancing, little effective masking, potential impairment leading to loss of inhibition and lots of shouting and spraying.
That’s why I find it hard to believe that Mardi Gras will happen at all this year in Jefferson Parish. We talked about that, Thanksgiving and the possibility of New Orleans parades moving to Jefferson with Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng this morning.
