State Rep. Gary Carter has won the special election to fill the state senate seat vacated by Troy Carter, who was elected to Congress.
Gary Carter is Troy Carter's nephew.
Carter won 60 percent of the vote in Saturday's special primary, coming out ahead of three other contenders to win outright and avoid a runoff.
Senate district seven represents Algiers and parts of the Westbanks of Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes.
