Louisiana's election day is 31 days away. Early voting is in two-and-a-half weeks, and mail-in ballots are being distributed now. It means time is not just running out, it may be out for some candidates to have a prayer of getting into the runoff.
"Election day is going on right now," points out pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics. Couvillon says it is not just early voting that narrows the window for candidates to make an impact.
"You also have mail-in voting, which is occurring now, in other words, ballots are being sent out across the state, and I estimate that is going to be probably about 100,000 votes," he said.
It reduces the share of undecided voters that candidates need to win over before election day, and Couvillon says the ones in single digits in recent polls would have to make an unlikely surge in popularity.
"If you're talking about that five percent being able to vault into a runoff position, you're basically trying to pull at least 20 more points over the next month," he said.
