The annual Washington D.C. Mardi Gras gets underway today. The event has become a staple for political folk who want to “see-and-be-seen,” network and raise money. LaPolitics Weekly publisher Jeremy Alford is in the nation’s capital, and says unofficial events started Wednesday, but the big show begins this evening.
"The official Washington D.C. Mardi Gras kicks off Thursday night, with a huge extravaganza called ‘Louisiana Alive’, that takes place in the ballroom of the Washington Hilton," said Alfros. "That’s really where all the official events take place."
Alford says there are any number of unofficial receptions, luncheons and cocktail parties associated with tonight's event where deals can be made. Alford says the events all lead to the big celebration, which brings the sights and sounds of a Mardi Gras parade indoors.
"You’ll see congressman dressed in tights, and attorneys and lobbyists parading and giving out beads in a kind of classic carnival style," said Alford.
Lobbyists, lawmakers and candidates all rub elbows in formal attire, bringing a bit of Louisiana to the capital city. Alford says a great many people running for office this fall will be in attendance, so it is not all just "Let the Good Times Roll."
"I think any serious candidate for governor is not only in D.C. for Washington Mardi Gras, but they’re also here raising money," he said.
Alford says if a person intended to announce a run for office this fall, this would be the place and time do it.
