Amid the ever-increasing numbers of Democrats who are asking President Joe Biden to drop out and the new polls showing that Biden is losing support among American voters, the president has insisted that he is physically and mentally sound and up for the job of running this country.
The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump seems to have given Trump a boost in the polls. President Biden has said that he would only drop out of the race if he was told he cannot win or if his doctors tell him to. Well, a new survey shows that 65% of Democrats believe Biden should drop out of the race. Among Independents, 77% believe Biden should step aside. New polls show that every possible Democratic candidate performs better in a head-to-head matchup with Trump than Biden.
The polls are now showing that Biden would have a very difficult time beating Trump, and Biden has now been diagnosed with COVID. Are these the two factors Joe Biden needs to encourage him to bow out of the race?
There are credible reports that President Biden could officially announce that he is dropping out of the presidential race this weekend. Axios is reporting that top Biden aides, some of whom have been pushing the president to stay in the race and fight, are saying the writing's on the wall and Biden should drop out.
Curtis Wilkie, a journalist who says he has known Joe Biden longer than any other journalist covering Biden, says that Biden is “a selfish man, weakened by age.”
Axios reports that Rep. Nancy Pelosi privately met with Biden and told him that if he stays in the race he could cost the Democrats the White House and control of Congress. I would hope this resonates with the president.
It seems clear that Biden is not up for the task of running this country and gracefully dropping out and retiring from politics is the best option for Biden and the country.
The Trump campaign has built their strategy on Joe Biden being Trump’s opponent in the race. If that changes - so does the strategy of Trump’s campaign. Trump’s campaign does not want Biden to drop out of the race. There has been no talk about Biden getting out of the race because of his age and mental health coming from the Trump campaign.
The problem for the Trump campaign is for a moderate Democrat to replace Joe Biden that might have the ability to steal the voters who are currently planning to vote for Trump only because they question Biden’s mental capabilities. A new Democrat in the race could attract those voters away from Trump.
The Heritage Foundation has apparently been working to ensure that Joe Biden is on the ballots in swing states and that is a testament to the fact that Biden is seen as the weakest candidate to go up against Trump.
As time passes, the public will still view the assassination attempt as a horrible event, but soon the focus will be back on Trump and his policies, which frighten many Americans.
As if this election season has not been unpredictable enough, the idea that a sitting president concedes his automatic nomination as the party’s candidate and a new, more vibrant candidate steps in to challenge Trump would make this election season even crazier.
