As a co-chair of Joe Biden’s campaign as well as a transition team co-chair, should Biden win the presidency, Louisiana second district congressman Cedric Richmond is being seen as a rising star on the political stage in Washington D.C.
His close relationship with Biden could catapult the five term congressman from Capitol Hill to the White House. Political Analyst Clancy Dubos made some predictions about what job he might get:
“He certainly could be considered for a White House post, and quite possibly a cabinet [appointment]. It all depends on what the offer is.”
Whatever position Richmond may be offered in a Biden White House, just having a native son of Louisiana that is close to the seat of power is a benefit for the state.
“A senior policy advisor on the domestic front, or Homeland Security Director, the Director of FEMA,” Dubos says. “It really depends on which job he gets in terms of what he could bring to Louisiana.”
Political publication The Hill says a Trade Representative spot could be in Richmond’s future.
“Something like a trade representative could be very beneficial to Louisiana because of our ports,” Dubos continues. “The Port of New Orleans, the Port of South Louisiana that could be a tremendous asset for our state and for our region.”
Dubos says Richmond is unique in that, like Biden, he is a consensus builder who is eager to reach across the aisle to get a job done.
He points to the close relationship between Richmond and Republican congressman Steve Scalise:
“Richmond is always one who speaks very highly and very kindly of his friend Steve Scalise,” Dubos says. “That friendship goes back to when both of them were in the state house of representatives more than 20-years-ago.”
