Sen. Cassidy: Trump can't win 2024 general election

Bill Cassidy
United States Senate

Senator Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) is casting doubt on Donald Trump's ability to win the 2024 presidential election.

The Pelican State's senior senator told CNN's Jake Tapper that he doesn't believe that the 45th president can beat the Democratic Party's nominee for the presidency, whether that nominee is President Joe Biden or someone else.

"I don't think Trump can win a general election," Sen. Cassidy told Tapper on the program State of the Union. "During the last election cycle, we saw in all the swing states--almost all--Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona--that the candidates for Senate that Trump endorsed all lost. If you’d've taken the votes that went to other Republicans and put them together, those Republicans would have won. So, I think the president’s kind of high-profile endorsement of those candidates actually hurt those candidates–at least in the general election."

Sen. Cassidy was one of only seven Republican senators to vote to convict then-President Trump on charges related to the January 6, 2021 insurrection at the United States Capitol. Cassidy, who took flak from voters in Louisiana for that vote, will not be up for reelection until 2026.
