A Democrat with some name recognition is jumping in the Louisiana Governor's race.

Recently retired DOTD secretary Shawn Wilson has officially launched his campaign.

His website says, "Shawn has over 25 years of experience in state government. Most recently, Shawn served as Louisiana’s Secretary of Transportation and Development, a position he held from 2016 until March 2023."

Wilson says he transformed the agency to be more collaborative and efficient.

"Shawn believes that by minimizing extreme policies, we can ensure long-term, sustainable solutions to keep Louisiana moving forward."

He lives in Lafayette.

Current Governor John Bel Edwards is the only statewide elected Democrat in a Republican dominated landscape.  Edwards is term limited out of office next year.

Other announced gubernatorial candidates include:

Daniel Cole (D)
Sharon Hewitt (R)
Xan John (R)
Jeff Landry (R)
Hunter Lundy (Independent)
Richard Nelson (R)
John Schroder (R)

The primary is October 14, 2023.
