“There’s battle lines being drawn - nobody’s right if everybody’s wrong.”
Buffalo Springfield, 1966 -
Democrats are drawing battle lines over the issue of whether President Joe Biden should drop out of the presidential race to allow another Democrat to take on former President Donald Trump in November. It is unprecedented, to say the least, that there is a vigorous debate over whether Biden should remain the Democratic candidate following Biden’s disastrous performance in the recent debate against Trump.
The day after the debate, the listless Biden seemed to bounce back with vibrance and that started a flurry of support for backing Biden, who had served our country for so many decades. However, the vocal support Biden has had in recent days has been partially drowned out by the chorus of Democratic voices demanding that Biden step aside and allow another Democrat to replace him.
But today, President Biden was resolute about staying in the race saying, “I’m not going anywhere!” Should that resolve be interpreted as confidence or stubbornness?
Biden has been described as an extremely proud man and that pride is preventing him from dropping out of the race. Perhaps Biden would feel humiliation by stepping aside, but what about the humiliation he may feel if he loses to Donald Trump? The polls are very close and even the flawed and diminished Biden could beat Trump in November, but there are a lot of voters who seem to be saying they are voting for Trump because they question Biden’s mental state and his behavior at his age. It seems many of those voters could easily be stolen from Trump by a Democrat who is younger and more mentally acute than Biden. That is obviously one reason you don’t hear Trump or right-wing radicals calling for Biden to drop out. They may believe Trump’s best chance of winning in November may be against Biden.
The conservative Heritage Foundation is vowing to make it “extraordinarily difficult” for the Democrats to replace Biden in key states. Yes, they want to help Trump by making sure Biden is Trump's challenger.
As I said long before the election, Biden is too old to be president for another 4 years. He’s not necessarily too old at 81, but the way he is at 81 is too old. Dr. Jill Biden is not the person who should make the decision. Of course, she wants Biden to stay in the race - Joe is her husband. But she is not a good source for determining the final decision.
Democratic strategist James Carville said that Democratic donors should stop all contributions to any Democrat who supports Biden staying in the race. Abigail Disney, heiress to the Disney fortune, announced she will withhold donations to Democrats until Joe Biden drops out of the race.
With all of the pressure from members of his own party and from some donors, Joe Biden is displaying total arrogance in his steadfast mantra “I will not drop out.”
In the UK, when the liberal party ended the extended rule of the conservatives - the leader said that change was coming and his party would put country first and party second.
Joe Biden’s insistence on staying in the race seems to put party first and country second and that’s not the way it should be. We ALL should stop putting party first. In America - it should be country first and party second - but that is not America’s current reality.
