The explosive attention generated by a fly landing on the head of Vice President Mike Pence during the debate with Democratic challenger Kamala Harris last night bespeaks the pain that lives in the hearts and minds of many Americans during the presidential campaign of 2020.

During the segment of the debate dedicated to racial tension in America, what appeared to be a typical house fly found a comfortable landing spot on the upper right side of VP Pence’s head. The black fly was impossible to ignore because of the contrast created by the snow-white hair of the Vice President. The fly remained nearly motionless for just over two minutes during the nationally televised debate, and Vice President Pence made no effort to swat the fly off of his head.

Did Pence not know the fly was there? Was he willing to endure the visual distraction over taking action against the fly? These are the post-debate questions voters that deserve to be answered.

The Biden campaign immediately seized on the opportunity to capitalize on the fly’s appearance by creating merchandise. For a donation to the Biden Victor Fund, you will receive a fly swatter with the words “Truth over Flies” printed on the handle.

Social media was ablaze with demands that “Saturday Night Live” producer Lorne Michaels get actor Jeff Goldblum to reprise his role as the fly in the 1986 horror movie, “The Fly.”

Since flies are known to feed off the carcass of dead animals - some suggested that the fly landing on Pence was a symbol that he’s lifeless.

We would like to thank the fly for the much needed distraction!
