What an honor it was to have Matthew live in our studio to talk about his role as an American who is volunteering to fight with Ukrainian soldiers in their fight to defend democracy from Russia.

We would love to post a picture or video, but Matthew has to remain anonymous out of fear that he could be arrested by Russians outside of Ukraine.  Matthew appeared in our studios dressed in his uniform and brought us a Ukrainian flag, some patches and unit coins.

Matthew spoke about the calling he felt as soon as Russia attacked Ukraine in a hostile attempt to conquer the democratic nation.  He shared what his life is like as he waits for his turn to join the forces on the front line and talked about the scary moment when the vehicle he was in was hit. Support from his wife and kids is very important and Matthew admitted that they do worry. But he is not alone - his wife even volunteered time to work behind the lines.

The descriptions of the morale of the Ukrainian troops were encouraging and the descriptions of the Russian soldiers who were captured or who surrendered were actually sad.

While Matthew was live on the air with us - a few texts came in from those who oppose the war and it was a reminder that some Americans tacitly support Putin and the Russians.

Matthew is already on his way back to Ukraine, but our conversation was enlightening and a reminder that even though it no longer tops the daily news - there is a war going on to protect democracy - and Matthew's courage is something to celebrate.
