Louisiana Senator John Kennedy went on the floor of the Senate to call on New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to release the names of the six finalists for our new NOPD chief. I don't always agree with Sen. Kennedy - but on this issue we agree.
In my conversation with Sen. Kennedy on my talk show, I asked the always glib senator how much the media is to blame for the great political divide in America today. Kennedy said that the news media is partially to blame because the news media has changed and he blamed the change on social media which he said "is eating us alive."
When I asked Sen. Kennedy about the deep divide in the Republican Party, he pointed out that many bills are passed with bipartisan support, and how many Republicans and Democrats get along - but the media doesn't report that. It's only the conflicts that get reported.
Kennedy said there was a time when the New York Times would report what you need to hear - but because of the influence of social media, the New York Times now reports what you want to hear. I agree and often talk about that on our show. As part of the free enterprise system in America, the news media has a goal of attracting the biggest audience for the sole purpose of generating revenue - therefore, it is logical that the media would be governed by the same principles as any form of entertainment in a capitalist society.
Turning to the 2024 election, I asked Sen. Kennedy about the Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ campaign struggles, and the senator was vague but said there's still a lot of time and the governor still has a chance.
Recently Sen. Kennedy said the Democrats are doing all they can to protect Hunter Biden and compared their effort to "working harder than an ugly stripper." I asked Sen. Kennedy, how does he know how hard ugly strippers work - to which he replied he is “just speculating!”
