A Denham Springs Police Officer diead after he was shot multiple times during a shootout on May 11 in the parking lot of a shopping center.
Chief Rodney Walker says Corporal Shawn Kelly was surrounded by his family, friends, and fellow Denham Springs police officers.
"On May 11th, 2023, evil and tragedy struck our community and because of it, we will forever be changed. Cpl Shawn Kelly was a great public servant, a great father, grandfather, husband and just a great human being, He was one of the finest men I’ve ever known," Chief Walker said. "The Denham Springs and Livingston Parish communities have truly lost one of its finest. On behalf, Cpl. Kelly’s family and his DSPD family, we thank you for your continued love, support and prayers during this difficult and tragic time."
Officers were responding to a call of a man and woman arguing when Kelly was shot.
“My officers arrived and were met with gunfire, they returned fire, the suspect knocked one of my officers down.” said Walker.
Livingston Parish Sheriff deputies then shot and fatally wounded 30-year-old Justin Roberts.
Corporal Kelly had been a certified police officer since 1997 and was hired by Denham Springs police in 2019. Kelly received multiple commendations for his generous ways and positive attitude.
