House approves death penalty expansion bill

State Capitol
State Legislature

Another bill that Governor Jeff Landry implored lawmakers to pass during the special legislative session on crime advances to the Senate.

On Friday, the Louisiana House of Representatives approved a bill expanding the state's ability to carry out death sentences. Under House Bill 6, authored by Rep. Nicholas Muscarello (R-Hammond), the Louisiana Department of Corrections would be allowed to execute death row inmates by electrocution and by nitrogen gas hypoxia. The law would keep the current method of lethal injection as an option for executions.

The bill also would keep secret information about who provides the state drugs for lethal injections.

The vote fell mostly along party lines. Seventy-one Republicans voted "yes." Three Republicans--Brach Myers (R-Lafayette), Stephanie Hilferty (R-Metairie), and Barbara Frieberg (R-Baton Rouge)--joined 26 Democrats who voted "no." Five House members were absent.
