Sheriff Joseph Lopinto reports that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Terrytown last night.

It happened just after 11:30 pm, in the 2000 block of Daniels Road.

JPSO Captain Jason Rivarde says JPSO deputies were dispatched to an apartment about a disturbance.

He says when deputies arrived, they attempted to contact the resident of the apartment. The resident refused to open the door for several minutes before eventually coming out armed with a cutter mattock which is similar to a pickaxe.

Rivarde says the resident charged at the responding deputies, causing one deputy to fire his weapon multiple times. The resident was struck multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.

The incident was recorded on body-worn camera.  An in-depth review of that camera footage will be a part of the investigation says Rivarde.

The victim’s identity is being withheld at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
