Landry: Tax code amendments need to be sent to voters now

Louisiana lawmakers are considering Governor Jeff Landry's proposal to overhaul Louisiana's tax code. That proposal includes implementing a flat three-percent income tax and taxing some personal services that currently are not taxed. The Governor says he's willing to consider alternatives to his ideas.

"What we put in these packages is not chiseled in stone," Gov. Landry told WWL's Newell Normand.

Gov. Landry said that if any lawmakers have other ideas to overhaul the tax system to make it more friendly to residents and businesses alike, he wants to know about them.

"If you've got the ability to get us to the same place a different way, I'm all in," Landry said.

Gov. Landry says he wants lawmakers to pass his reforms in this session so they can go to the voters in March. Then, he says, lawmakers can then make tweaks as they see fit during next year's fiscal session.

"We can fix or anything that we do. That doesn't happen often," Landry said. "That constitutional amendment on the ballot helps free up the locals and the legislature from things that have been tied up in Article VII forever."
