Concealed carry of a gun without a permit is one step closer to becoming law in the state of Louisiana.

The Louisiana Senate approved a bill by Sen. Blake Miguez (R-New Iberia) legalizing permitless concealed carry. The vote fell along party lines. All 28 Republicans voted "yes," while 10 of the 11 Democrats in the chamber voted "no." Sen. Jay Luneau (D-Pineville) was absent for the vote.

The state Senate killed similar bills in each of the last two regular legislative sessions after the House voted overwhelmingly to approve such a measure. Governor Jeff Landry has vowed to sign the bill into law if it clears the legislature.

The bill's champions say allowing Louisiana residents to carry concealed guns without a permit will deter crime because it would allow law-abiding citizens to intervene when crime takes place. Opponents say allowing permitless concealed carry will allow people who are not properly trained in handling firearms to carry a gun, possibly leading to more shootings. Opponents also believe permitless concealed carry will put law enforcement officers in danger while taking away an officer's ability to stop a possible criminal when they spot someone carrying a concealed gun.
