Newly-redrawn Louisiana congressional districts create a second district with majority-Black voting age residents. Lawmakers approved the bill backed by Governor Jeff Landry and have sent it to him for approval.

The districts seek to comply with a federal judge's order to come up with a map that acknowledges the state's one-third Black population. U.S. District Judge Shelley Dick ruled the six districts drawn up after the 2020 Census violated the Voting Rights Act.

The new version of the Louisiana Sixth Congressional District may leave Republican Garrett Graves as the odd man out.

Some political observers note that this district is favored by Landry, who did not have Graves' support in the recent governor's race. Graves backed Stephen Waguespack, former president of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry and a former official in Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration.
