Louisiana House set to take up constitutional convention vote

Today the Louisiana House is set to take up calling a constitutional convention, a vote they put off last week.

Rep. Beau Beaullieu's bill calls for a limited constitutional convention, not a wholesale rewrite. It specifies that delegates will not change the homestead exemption, for example, and will not accept private donations during the convention.


There's just one catch:

"Delegates, once they're in a convention, do not have to follow the enabling legislation," said LaPolitics.com publisher Jeremy Alford.

Alford, author of The Last Constitution, about the drafting of Louisiana's current constitution, says in that convention, delegates immediately tossed out the rules and came up with a new set.

"Delegates went in on the first day and decided to write it themselves and created a committee on committees, a committed on rules," said Alford.

This convention would begin in just under two weeks if lawmakers in both houses approve
