Calling recent legislation passed in Baton Rouge a "blatant, relentless and systemic attack on democracy and civil rights," the NAACP Louisiana State Conference warned the Black and LGBTQ+ people in Louisiana should exercise "extreme caution."

The statement cited recent bills to ban gender-affirming treatment for minors, ban discussion of sexual or gender identity in schools, and allow the jailing of 17-year-olds with adults.

The national NAACP recently issued a travel warning for Florida because of similar legislation passed and signed into law there.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has expressed his disapproval of the bills, but has not said whether he would veto them. Even if he did, Republican lawmakers hold a two-thirds majority in both chambers and could override them.

The bills passed with overwhelming Republican support.
