Newell: U.S. energy sector has the workers to bring oil prices down

Make no mistake - America’s pain at the pump could’ve easily been avoided. Now, The Biden White House wants to negotiate oil deals with an autocratic country like Venezuela and is asking OPEC to produce more oil, instead of just allowing for more domestic oil production. I spoke with Scott Angelle, former Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana and Natural Resources Secretary, back in October about oil prices surging. He said this would happen. He revisited the show today, not to say he was right, but to say oil prices can stabilize. His solution is simple; unleash U.S. energy workers and undo restrictions of energy production in the Gulf of Mexico.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently told reporters to ask the private energy sector why they're not drilling for oil on over 9,000 drilling permits.  With your knowledge of drilling permits, could you explain how that process actually works?

In the name of improving the environment, the Biden White House said “no” to the U S. energy worker and said “yes” to foreign production. The administration said “no” to leasing in federal lands and waters in January of 2021, and then we began seeing the uptick in energy prices.  By that summer, the president was calling OPEC, begging them to give us more oil production while we were saying “no” to those opportunities here in America

There’s no guarantee that these leases will even have oil or gas and there's still a lot of regulatory things that need to be done. You used to be the director of an agency that had that regulatory authority, right?

Let me be abundantly clear, the price of energy didn't start moving just because Russia invaded Ukraine. That’s the message that is being played out on fake news outlets. The main reason that we don't have capital being deployed in the oil gas industry is fear that the long arm of the government will come and get you. It’s ironic now that the Secretary of the Department of Energy is saying the U.S. wants more oil production. You’ll have a tough time finding any statement or action that supports the idea that this administration supports domestic energy production.

The Biden White House doesn't have a retreating position from what has been put forth by green energy supporters. Politically, what is happening now?

Having assessed the blame and brought the facts to light, I think we need a solution. The Gulf of Mexico holds a great deal of promise to help energize and fuel this country. But there's a lot of fear that increasing American production might very well change in another month. We've had six recessions from 1973 to 2019 in this country, and each of those recessions were preceded by a spike in energy prices. History shows when America's access to affordable energy goes, so goes our economic performance. We sell more cars when we have affordable energy. We build more homes when we have affordable energy.
