The Louisiana Fire Marshal’s Office wants to remind of you to practice fireworks safety this Independence Day weekend.

Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue said it is always best to attend a public display where professionals are handling them, but if you choose to do your own make, sure i is legal to do so at your location.

“Relative to property and people, make sure you’re about 200 feet away from homes, vehicles and of course people who will be watching,” said Rodrigue.

Rodrigue said never set off fireworks if you are impaired, and it is best to not to allow children to handle fireworks whatsoever.

“Even those sparklers, those are fire, and they are hot, and they can and do cause extreme burn damage to hands, sometimes faces, depending on what type of creativity children might come up with,” said Rodrigue.

Always make sure you have water nearby in case things get out of control. When the show is over, make sure they are watered down and no longer smoldering, otheerwise the danger of lighting something else on fire remains.

“And you’ve either got a fire on the side of the road, or you’ve got in your garbage which can be next to your home or even in your garage which now means you’re going to have a fire in your home,” said Rodrigue.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 11,000 injuries were caused by fireworks in 2021.
