The outcome of wars is decided by specific battles within the wars. Certain battles define the war. There is an ongoing war within the Republican Party, and a current battle taking place may determine which side wins the war.
Republicans are faced with whether to punish Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for promoting QAnon beliefs and numerous conspiracy theories, like that the Parkland High School shooting was staged by the U.S. government. Taylor Greene has publicly called for putting a “bullet in the head” of Nancy Pelosi, as well as calling for the execution of other Democrats.
At the same time, Republicans are deciding if Rep. Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, should be admonished for her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump. This could be a significant battle in the war within the Republican Party.
The word “battle” is defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary as an extended contest, struggle or controversy. The battle raging on Capitol Hill involving Taylor Greene and Cheney is a microcosm of the current war for the post-Trump direction of the Republican Party.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is being pressured to take action. He met with Taylor Greene yesterday and then called a late-night meeting with the House GOP Steering Committee, which is responsible for appointing members to committees. Marjorie Taylor Greene was rewarded with a place on the House Education and Labor Committee, but Democrats argue that her belief that the Parkland shooting was a hoax should disqualify her from serving on that committee.
Some Republicans are demanding that Rep. Cheney be censured and stripped from her position as 3rd ranking Republican or even removed from office because of her vote to impeach former President Trump.
This is an early, but significant, battle within the Republican Party that may determine which side wins the war over the direction of the party. Will Republicans come to the defense Liz Cheney, one of their own? Or will Republicans come to the defense of Marjorie Taylor Greene?
Following 4 years of the Trump Administration and all accompanied that in American politics, Republicans have lost the White House, the Senate and the House. Next year’s mid-term elections will be a political bloodbath.
The challenge for Republicans is whether to continue to follow the path blazed by former President Trump or divorce the Trump influence and allow more moderate voices to take over. Right now, it seems like the GOP is following Trump as he remains silent and in seclusion at his Mar-a-Lago resort.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has threatened Democrats that if they support an effort to remove her from any committee, they will have hell to pay if the Republicans win back control of both Houses of Congress next year in the mid-term elections. Taylor Greene essentially guaranteed the Republicans will win in 2022.
Former President Trump never condemned QAnon or his followers who are believers in the fantasy conspiracies, and devoted Trump supporters viewed the ex-president’s position as an endorsement of QAnon. But the association with QAnon should prove to be toxic for the Republican Party.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has produced a TV and digital campaign aimed at linking the GOP to QAnon. The 30-second spots will support 7 House Republicans that will be in a fight to save their seats. The message of the campaign to attack Republicans is they “stood with Q, not you.”
The fact that Republicans are battling over a House member who promotes a false belief that Democrats and Hollywood elites are Satanic pedophiles that operate a sophisticated child sex trafficking ring and covet the drinking of blood taken from the children as they are being killed or raped and another House member who voted to impeach former President Trump makes a strong statement about how the struggle for the Republican Party is clearly a struggle of good vs. evil.
If Marjorie Taylor Greene is not punished and Liz Cheney is - Republicans may have fired the that will end the war and they will be the losers.
