Three dolphins believed to be stranded by Hurricane Laura’ storm surge, were rescued from a drainage canal in Grand Chenier Louisiana.

The huge rescue effort happened September 29th. Wildlife rescuers with the Audubon Coastal Wildlife Network and the Southeast Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network managed to rescue the dolphin mother, her calf and another female dolphin who were stranded in the drainage system.

It took two days to get the dolphins back into the Gulf of Mexico.

"All three dolphins were safely rescued, transported, and released back into the Gulf of Mexico at Rutherford Beach," said Gabriella Harlamert, Audubon Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding, Rescue, and Rehab Coordinator. "We're thankful to have worked with these great partners to help save these animals. Collaborative efforts such as this are making a positive impact on marine life in Louisiana."

The dolphins were tagged and researchers will remotely track the dolphins over the next several months.
