Tommy: Just wear a mask

Life isn’t a single picture. It’s a movie, a motion picture, with twists and turns and unexpected developments. You may have heard me espouse that theory on the air many times because I’ve said it often. You don’t just wind up somewhere. Where we are today is a result of everything that’s happened before. Things change. They’ve certainly changed with Covid.

Back on March 6th, in the early days of Covid, I wrote a blog titled "Stop panicking over the coronavirus." In it I wrote about having “had it with hysteria over this virus” and compared the deaths related to COVID-19 with deaths associated with flu and driving. The last sentence said “…there have been FOURTEEN coronavirus deaths in this country.”

Currently the death toll stands at TWO HUNDRED SIXTY- SEVEN THOUSAND plus and counting. I also wrote “I HOPE I GET THE CORONAVIRUS. I’m not sick but I’ll get sick if it proves the coronavirus emperor isn’t wearing clothes.” Talk about a little bit of knowledge being a dangerous thing.

So here we are on the final day of November. Do I still want to get the coronavirus? Absolutely NOT! Back in March I suggested my concerns were more financial than physical and that “having a bad cold for ten days will be worth it…” COVID is far more serious than a bad cold and I rescind that offer immediately.

That being said, I still have major financial concerns about the spread of the disease. I don’t think we can withstand another shutdown. I also don’t think its necessary. I was wrong when I said I wanted the virus. I admit it. But my fears for the economy are well founded and very real. That’s why we all need to wear masks.

Somehow the political battlelines have been distorted so those who won’t wear masks think they’re doing it make a statement. In actuality that behavior is almost certainly assuring a shutdown will happen. And NOBODY wants that, right?

I shall conclude with vaccines.

Back in March I said I wanted COVID if it meant it would save the economy. I changed my mind as I learned more. But, as it stands now, I will be the first in line of willing participants to receive an approved vaccine. I’ve made the decision to trust science, which includes believing that a vaccine is safe if the medical community says it is.

Will you? Will you wear a mask? I will, and I do. After all what choice do I have? It’s the ONLY thing I can do to help put this nightmare behind us.
