There are times when it’s hard to believe what you’re hearing.
When you hear stories of vehicles being broken into over and over and over again. Tales of a couple having their guns locked and loaded on their respective nightstands before they go to bed at night. And how about hearing shots in the middle of the night while you’re IN bed then proceeding to grab your gun and take safe position behind a wall in your home? Then, after its all over, you review the video and realize a police officer has been shot in front of your house.
That, and more, is what I heard from Malcolm Faber, a former NOPD officer who, along with his wife, continues to live in their home on Camp Street. But the story goes back to before they were married when the future Mrs. Faber was carjacked and assaulted in front of that same house. She loves it and won’t move. I admire her for her determination and love of the city of New Orleans. But its not fair to her or him. Nor is it fair to any other citizen or visitor to the Crescent City.
Football fans know that when an opposing team’s offense is successfully running the football, you’d better stop it because they’ll continue to do it until you do. That’s where we are with crime in the city. The thugs and thieves are very successfully, and they’ll keep doing it until they’re stopped. I’ve yet to hear an adjustment or game plan from any official that would accomplish that.
Listen to my conversation with Malcom Faber. I don’t know what’s more surreal: the victimization that he and his wife have suffered or their commitment to stay where they are and not be run off.
