Made in America sticker

Those of you that listen regularly know that I learned a bit about filmmaking while earning my degree from UNO; and as a result, I love watching movies of all genres. In other words, I love me some old movies.

One thing that always strikes me is that as the films become more and more recent is the number of jobs you see characters performing that don’t exist anymore. Jobs that people were doing in a 1940’s movie weren’t there in the movie from the 1950’s and jobs in those films were gone in films from the 60’s and on and on it goes.

Have you ever noticed the difference in technology from a movie made in 2010 and one made today? It’s startling.

I mention that as a backdrop to a conversation I had with Professor Willie Shih, a Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School, specifically as it relates to manufacturing jobs. BOTH President Trump and President Biden are misleading the public when they spin a tale of high paying manufacturing jobs coming back to the United States. Those days as portrayed in old movies are gone forever but that doesn’t make the situation all bleak.

Job creation all begins with real leadership and elected officials who look forward and adapt. Officials who look back and sell a phony dream of days gone by are helping no one but themselves in the hopes of being reelected and hurting the very people they are elected to serve.

Listen to what the Professor had to say and see if you agree totally, partially or not at all. Either way it will be interesting.
