If you're planning on flying to Hawaii any time soon, be prepared to pay an exorbitant amount for a rental car. Prices are skyrocketing because of the pandemic, with really no end in sight.
Visitors to the islands have come up with a little workaround, however, to ensure being able to get around the island efficiently without paying an insane amount to do so: U-Haul trucks.
Tourists can expect to pay upwards of $700 a day for a rental, though renting a truck from U-Haul starts at $19.95 daily, with additional fees.
Kaleo Alau, U-Haul Company of Hawaii president, told CNN, "This surge in demand is primarily for our smaller vehicles. We realize this demand is occurring when tourists are unable to secure a rental car, or they learn that our rental fleet options are more affordable."
Unfortunately, this now means that those who are seeking out U-Haul trucks to actually move are coming up short in their searches.
The issue hasn't just affected Hawaii, though. Rental car companies across the country have seen a dip in car rentals, leading them to sell a portion of their fleet as used cars or renting them out for a fraction of the price.
CNN reports that the industry has sold off nearly half a million cars this year in order to survive the pandemic.
