Today I denounced a ridiculous notion that former President Donald Trump is promoting. During a speech at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s “Road to Majority Conference” on Saturday, ex-President Trump said that “Christianity will not be safe” under a second term of the Biden Administration. Trump warned that Christians will not be allowed to say “We answer to God” and if they do they will be arrested.
This is fear-mongering at its best. There is no evidence the Biden Administration is targeting Christians in an effort to arrest Christians and Catholics whenever they can.
On several occasions, ex-President Trump has said that President Biden is “going violently and viciously after Catholics.” Biden, himself, is a Catholic. Again, there is zero evidence to support this crazy idea about the Biden Administration launching a crusade to arrest Christians and Catholics.
Trump said, “Joe Biden and the Democrats want to prosecute Americans for going to church,” but that was in the summer of 2020 when 10 states had stay-at-home mandates during the Covid-19 pandemic. To stretch that into a general fear that Biden and the Democrats were targeting Christians and Catholics hoping to arrest them is insane. And Trump was president at the time and this was Trump’s attempt to beat Biden. Well, it didn’t work then so why is Trump trying it again in 2024?
Trump posted on Truth Social, “Under Crooked Joe Biden, Christians and Americans of faith are being persecuted like this nation has ever seen before. Catholics in particular are being targeted and evangelicals are surely on the watchlist as well.”
Expert analysis shows no data supporting the idea that Catholics in America are being persecuted by the government for their faith - let alone at record levels.
Under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act, federal prosecutors have investigated 24 cases involving 55 defendants since January of 2021. These are cases of pro-life individuals who created violent situations or attempted to break the law by blocking access to reproductive health services. The pro-life protesters involved were Christians or Catholics, but it’s obvious that they were not targeted because of their faith - they were targeted because they broke the law. That’s like saying a Christians arrested for DWI was arrested because of his/her faith. No, they were arrested because they were drinking and driving.
Republican strategist and Fox News contributor Karl Rove warns of a downward trend in the polls for Trump following his conviction on 34 felony counts. Rove says this looks more serious than a blip on the radar. This kind of information must infuriate Trump, who never accepts the reality of anything negative about him.
It is fair to say that Trump may be grabbing for anything he can as those around him may be cautioning him about certain realities that he refuses to accept.
But this is for sure - President Biden is not targeting Christians and Catholics - this is a blatant lie and should not be believed by anyone who shares basic common sense. Do not fall for the lies - which do come from both sides, but the recent fear mongering over you being arrested for being a Christian is absurd.
