Vote postponed on Metairie Mardi Gras in May and St. Pat's in July

JP Council

The Jefferson Parish Council today delayed a vote to move Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day parades to later in 2021.

Krewes would roll as early as the end of May under the plan that now returns to the agenda in January.

The proposal calls for Carnival parades to be rescheduled from February to May, rolling Memorial Day weekend.  Memorial Day is May 31st, 2021.

"It's a cultural event for sure, but it's actually or biggest cultural event.," Councilwoman Jennifer VanVranken said.

She insisted having parades at some point is crucial to the economy.

"This is an opportunity for us to signal that we are open for business and what people to come back."

Meanwhile the Family Gras concerts could happen on actual Mardi Gras or move to May as well.  Meanwhile the 50th Metairie Road St. Patrick's Day Parade would move to Independence day.

"Uncle Sam said he didn't have a problem sharing birthdays," parade Captain Dan Civello said.

A final vote on the plan is now expected after a time line for vaccine distribution is clear.

The proposal is back on the calendar for January 13th, 2021.
