A well-defined tropical wave may develop into a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Debby in the next seven days, and it could happen in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

"Development of  this system should be slow to occur during the next couple of days while it moves west-northwestward over portions of the Greater Antilles," said Dr. Jack Beven, a Senior Hurricane Specialist at the National Hurricane Center.

"A tropical depression could form this weekend or early next week over the eastern Gulf of Mexico or near the Florida Peninsula," said Beven.

WWL-TV meteorologist Payton Malone says there are still a lot elements about this potential storm that are unknown.

"Many models have been shifting towards and Eastern Gulf system later this weekend into early next week," he said. "Unfortunately the picture doesn't become any clearer next week."
