The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Ian is a major storm heading for Florida after crossing over Cuba.
The Hurricane Warning has been extended for more than a hundred miles of the Florida Gulf Coast on either side of Tampa Bay.
"Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion," the Hurricane Center warned today.
Ian is heading from Cuba to Florida.
"On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move... over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico later this morning, pass west of the Florida Keys later today, and approach the west coast of Florida within the hurricane warning area on Wednesday and Wednesday night."
Winds are forecast to exceed 140 miles per hour as the hurricane gets stronger.
"Ian is forecast to approach the west coast of Florida as a major hurricane."
Forecasters warn of devastating impacts.
"The combination of storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline."
The forecast calls for a surge of five to ten feet at landfall.

Winds could cause serious damage too.
"Destructive winds are expected," the Hurricane Center warns.
Rain will cause flooding too.
Parts of Florida could see up to 24 inches.
There could be funnel clouds too.
"Tornadoes are possible today through Wednesday across the Florida Keys and the southern and central Florida Peninsula."
