Gulf disturbance may develop late this week, lots of uncertainty

Tropics

The National Hurricane Center says a mess area of stormy weather in the southern Gulf of Mexico has not shown signs of development yet.

"Disorganized showers and thunderstorms continue over the Bay of Campeche and southern Mexico in association with a broad low pressure area," according to the Tropical Weather Outlook.

Forecasters say not much change is expected today or tomorrow.

"However, the disturbance should begin to move northward by Thursday, and a tropical depression is likely to form late in the week when the low moves across the central or northwestern Gulf of Mexico."

The Hurricane Center says that's when we will get a better idea what areas will see downpours from the system.

"Heavy rains could also begin to impact portions of the northern Gulf Coast on Friday."

Those showers could continue into Saturday somewhere from Texas to Florida.

We won't a have a good idea of where the rain will fall until the system actually develops.

"Formation chance through 5 days...high...70 percent."

If the system gets a name, it could be Claudette.  That's because the National Hurricane Center is also tracking Tropical Storm Bill a few hundred miles east-southeast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.  It is not a threat to land.
