We could have the first named storm of the hurricane season soon in the Gulf of Mexico.

"A large area of disturbed weather is located over Central America, the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, and the adjacent waters of the northwestern Caribbean Sea and southern Gulf of Mexico," according to the National Hurricane Center.

Forecasters say a broad area of low pressure is forecast to form from this system over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico within the next day or so.

"Environmental conditions appear conducive for subsequent gradual development of the low, and a tropical depression or tropical storm is likely to form by midweek."

Whether is develops or not, the system is forecast to be a big rain maker.

"Regardless of development, several days of heavy rainfall are expected across portions of southern Mexico and Central America, and these rains are likely to cause life-threatening flooding and flash flooding."

The impact will be far beyond the southern Gulf.

"Locally heavy rainfall is also expected to spread over portions of the northwestern coast of the Gulf of Mexico by the middle of the week."

WWL TV Meteorologist Alexa Trischler says the Monday will see the heaviest rain for Southeast Louisiana.

"Rich tropical moisture will continue to pour into the region early this week leading to scattered rain and storms moving in on Monday.  With ample moisture, storms can produce bouts of heavy rain at times. Isolated street flooding is possible on Monday."

She says Tuesday and Wednesday will also see rounds of rain.

Formation chance through seven days is high at 70 percent.

It is expected to move into Mexico.
