The National Hurricane Center says the eye of Hurricane Ida hit the Louisiana coast near Port Fourchon in LaFourche Parish.
It came after the hurricane rapidly intensified in the Gulf of Mexico and became a major, category four hurricane.
It happened at 11:55am.
"Data from an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft and Doppler radar data indicate that Ida's maximum sustained winds at landfall were estimated to be 150 mph," the Hurricane Center said.
Winds had been 105 miles per hour Saturday night, but quickly got stronger early Sunday morning.
The forecast track calls for the eye of the hurricane to move near Houma, Thibodaux before heading for Walker in Livingston parish... then into Mississippi.
