The tenth named of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Jerry, is forecast to reach hurricane strength by the end of the week. The 2025 season is running a little behind average, except in one area.

The 30-year average for the Atlantic hurricane season is ten named storms by early September. But three of our named storms this year have hit category four or five.

LSU Health Climatologist Barry Keim says that's ahead of the curve.

"We average about three major hurricanes a season. So far we've had three," said Keim. "There's probably still room to pick up another one along the way."

Keim says this has been a topsy-turvy season.

"You might not expect to see us above normal with major hurricanes in a year when overall, the number of storms has been below normal."

Hurricanes Erin and Humberto hit category five, and Hurricane Gabrielle was a category four. All of the storms stayed out to sea.
