Still dangerous with 125 mph top winds

Ida

Hurricane Ida continues to slowly weaken, still dangerous but now with top winds of 125 miles per hour, a Category 3 hurricane. It made landfall at Port Fourchon lat this morning as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour.

The storm has taken a more north-northwest turn, meaning more of its hurricane strength winds have the potential to reach metro New Orleans as it passes by to the west. Ida's forward speed is to the northwest at ten miles per hour.


New Orleans has yet to experience the worst of what Ida is expected to bring. The National Hurricane Center reports a sustained winds at Lakefront Airport of 66 mph with a gust of 84. A weather monitoring site on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway reported sustained winds of 64 mph and gusts up to 81 mph.
