Parts of southeastern Louisiana saw heavy rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, but New Orleans didn't see any of that activity. However, the surrounding cloud cover made for a more comfortable afternoon and evening than what we experienced over the last few days.
That little bit of cloud cover may be the only shield from the heat the Crescent City sees for a good while, as extreme heat and humidity dominate the forecast for the next seven to ten days. Spotty showers stay in the forecast because, after all, it is the summer and a stray shower or two could pop up across the area. High temperatures will peak between 96 and 99 degrees over the next week, with heat indices hitting or surpassing the 110° mark. If you have to be outside, make sure you hydrate and take plenty of breaks in the shade or in an air conditioned area.
Overnight lows will stay in the low 80s south of Lake Pontchartrain. North of the lake, lows will dip into the upper 70s.
While Tropical Storm (soon-to-be Hurricane) Debby threaten Florida, Louisiana is clear of any tropical activity for at least a week. The National Hurricane Center is keeping an eye on a wave just north of the South American coast, but the NHC forecasts that the wave has only a 20-percent chance of developing into a cyclone in the next seven days. However, forecasters note that the wave will move over the Winward Islands and enter the Caribbean Sea in the latter part of this week.
