Possible development in the Gulf could bring rain to S.E. LA

The National Hurricane Center says a disturbance in the Gulf is likely to bring heavy rain somewhere from Florida to Louisiana.

"A broad trough of low pressure currently located over the northern Gulf of Mexico is producing a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms," according to an NHC advisory. "Gradual development of this system is possible."

There is only a 10% chance of formation over the next two days and 30% in five days.

"Regardless of development, heavy rains will be possible along portions of the northern Gulf coast from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle over the next several days."

WWL TV Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin says computer models disagree on how much rain we will see.

"Rain may be the big focus this week," he explained.  "I say 'may' only because confidence is rather low for our forecast."

He says the most reliable forecast programs show different scenarios.

"The environment in the Gulf isn't conducive for a strong or organized tropical system, so that isn't really a threat. The real threat will be rainfall accumulations. Models are all over the place."

Franklin says we will know more in a couple of days.

"If it remains a sloppy and unorganized system, rain may be all over the northern Gulf coast. A bit more organization and structure, then most rain would likely remain to the east of the low center."
