Hurricane center warns of potential tropical depression in Gulf

The National Hurricane Center says it is monitoring Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine in the Gulf of Mexico.

"A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for portions of south Texas," the NHC advised.

While the system is heading toward Texas and Mexico, some showers and breezy conditions will pass through Southeast Louisiana.

The hurricane center will designate a system a "potential tropical cyclone" and issue watches and warnings even if meteorologists have not detected a closed center of circulation.

"Some rain crossing New Orleans," WWL TV Meteorologist Alexandra Cranford said. "It's moving fast, so probably not a big flooding threat today with any of these showers; but they are sent here from the disturbance in the Gulf."

Forecasters say expect a depression or Tropical Storm Harold to develop before it makes landfall Tuesday morning.

"Tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within 24 hours," the Hurricane Center warned. "Interests elsewhere in eastern Texas and northern Mexico should monitor the progress of this system."

Three other tropical systems in the Atlantic Basin are forecast to stay away from the Gulf of Mexico this week.
