The National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Nicholas formed Sunday morning in the southern Gulf of Mexico.
"The center of Tropical Storm Nicholas was located by reconnaissance aircraft," forecasters advised. "Nicholas is moving toward the north-northwest."
The storm is not forecast to gain hurricane strength.
"The center of Nicholas will pass near or just offshore the coasts of northeastern Mexico and South Texas late Monday, and approach the south or central Texas coast Monday night or early Tuesday."
While the New Orleans area and the region hit by Hurricane Ida is forecast to get some rain from Nicholas, the impacts are forecast to be more dramatic to the west of Southeast Louisiana.
"Nicholas is expected to produce storm total rainfall of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 15 inches, across portions of coastal Texas into southwest Louisiana today through the middle of the week.
This rainfall may produce areas of flash, urban, and isolated river flooding."
New Orleans could get four inches over the next few days.
