The re-election of Donald Trump would be a threat to our democracy.
Yes, America is technically a federal democratic republic but we are commonly referred to as a democracy. Conventional wisdom among anti-Trump America is the warning that the election of Trump in 2024 will directly threaten our democracy. Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is contributing to the concerns that if Trump is elected, he will refuse to leave office at the end of his 4 years in office - thus ushering America into a dictatorship.
Treating Trump as a threat to our democracy seems to be gaining traction, and now Trump is promoting the fear that the re-election of President Joe Biden is a threat to our democracy.
The ultimate attack on a political opponent is to suggest that their victory would destroy American democracy. What would be a bigger threat? It's one thing to say the political opposition will not move our country in the right direction or that specific things will only get worse, but it is quite another thing to say that a political opponent would destroy the American form of government.
Considering the compelling evidence and the admission of guilt of many of Trump's lawyers and allies that he did attempt to steal the 2020 election, there is reason to believe that another Trump presidency would carry the real threat of Trump physically refusing to leave office. But Trump would have to have the U.S. military and all departments of government behind him to remain in office after his term was over and I don't think that would ever be possible.
The fear that President Biden is a threat to democracy is based on the belief that liberal policies have the power to destroy America and I don't see that as a possibility either.
As Americans we have a very powerful weapon with which to fight the ridiculous extremes of political fear mongering today. That weapon is the ability we have to ignore such drivel. Yes, just ignore it. You don't have to accept every extreme attack against a politician. You have the power to just ignore the fear mongering and if we collectively ignore it, then maybe one day the temptation to submit such nonsense will begin to decrease.
I was young, but I remember the turmoil of 1968. I remember a young generations' revolt against the U.S. government and the governments' attempts to suppress a young generation. I remember hanging chads and Jan. 6th. America has survived a lot of things that might have led to a change in the form of the government of many countries - but not the United States. I have faith that the intense fear mongering between the two political warring factions will not be prophetic and that America will get through this time. And as a talk show host - I appreciate that the tactics of fear mongering will continue to provide daily material for my show!
