Tommy: Zach Strief reminds us we're all better off when we vote

One of the many, many things I learned at WWL is that things are seldom what they appear to be on the surface, and still waters do indeed run deep. I don’t care whether it's politics, economics, sports or something else, you certainly can’t know what’s in the book or the story just by inferring what the title or headline implies.

One of those things is the “dumb jock” stereotype. I have had the pleasure of conversing in-depth with Bobby Hebert, Deuce McCallister, Zach Strief and others, and I've found some of the more fascinating discussions had nothing at all to do with football. It was Bobby Hebert, believe it or not, who taught me about the Protestant Reformation.


I was talking to Zach Strief, longtime player and now the Voice of the Saints, about the Saints/Bears game this morning but I first wanted to pick his Northwestern-educated brain to get his thoughts on politics in America as we all wait and wonder on the eve of election day.
