Often times a photo can tell the entire story. There's certainly no shortage of photographs like that to come across when you're looking at rock & roll's history.

Here's a look at 5 iconic rock photos and the stories behind them.


1. The Beatles with Ed Sullivan

Considered to be one of the most famous rock & roll performances in television history, The Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show helped kicked off Beatlemania in America. Appearing on three consecutive Sundays in February 1964, an estimated 73 million viewers watched the broadcasts.

2. Perry Farrell at Lollapalooza 2005

The foundation of Lollapalooza as one of America's premier music festivals was laid in 2005 when it returned from a hiatus and reestablished itself in Chicago's Grant Park. Jane's Addiction frontman Perry Farrell is one of the main figures behind the festival and has been actively involved in it since 2005.

3. Jimi Hendrix at the Isle of Wight Festival

The Guinness World Records estimates that 600,000-700,000 people attended the English festival in 1970. Hendrix's performance was his last in the U.K. as he passed away three weeks later. His set was released posthumously in November 2002 as a CD and a DVD.

4. Woodstock Crowd

Out of the many iconic performances at Woodstock 1969, it's the crowd that stands out as one of the most impactful images from the event. With over 400,000 people estimated in attendance, the festival marked a pivotal point in history. A massive traffic jam caused many to abandon their cars and walk to the festival.

5. Bob Dylan & Joan Baez Performing at the March on Washington

The March on Washington played a major role in helping pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with attendance estimates ranging from 200,000-300,000 participants. It was the site of Martin Luther King's historic "I Have A Dream" speech. Baez & Dylan performed during the event joining together to sing "When The Ship Comes In."
