(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Given the chill in the air the past few days, it may be hard to believe the past year is shaping up to be Chicago's warmest on record.

The city’s warmer-than-usual temperatures broke the record for the warmest year-to-date through November, which was set in 1921 with an average temperature of 56.4 degrees, the weather service said.

The third-warmest year through November is 2012, which saw a year-to-date average temperature of 56.1 degrees, said Gino Izzi, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The record has since been broken.

“Through the month of November, our average temperature is about 57 degrees. So obviously, we're running above normal for the year to date,”  Accuweather Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said.

Lundberg expects December will be no different. The temperature for the month is 27.1 degrees, but the weeks ahead are looking much warmer.

“Our average temperature for the entirety of December is about 30.5 degrees. So to average 27.1 we would have to be, what, 3.4 degrees below normal for the month of a whole.”

Those warmer than usual temperatures seem to be a trend. Some of the warmest years have been 2021, 2020, 2017 and 2012.

“In fact, if you look at the numbers, six of the top 10 are all of the last 10 years.”
